happy birthday little lady!

picture-16

May 26th is her official birthday but her mama decided to throw an early shindig.

I think it’s safe to say the this little gal turned-three had a WONDERFUL time at her party! More details to come soon…

Things are about to get very very cute

dsc_0241

This little man is very handsome.

I must admit that he is quite fun, too. The last time I spent the day with an eight-month-old I did not have, nearly, as much fun as I did with this dude.

And though I was very amused with him, I think he could have taken or left my company.

At times, he thought I was entertaining.

And at other times, he preferred to entertain himself.Brace yourself. This little booger, he’s adorable.

While he enjoyed attempting to dislodge the house keys from their chain, I soaked in the sunshine.

Little bean may have gotten a bit sleepy.

But when he got a little bite sleepy, I tried to make a joke.

And though my joke may not have been that funny, he remained a gentleman and laughed a polite laugh. We ate snacks together.

And he even hosted a trip to the Life and Sciences museum!

“Hey Jasper, why don’t you just take a seat with me on my nice blanket?”
“Alright, if you’re gunna be like that, I’ll just nibble on my mummum.”

“I think I hit a tooth…”

“Nah, there’s only three little teeth in there…”

“I am just too cute for words, aren’t I?”

Yes, you are too cute!

But not too cute to keep snapping photos!“I think I see a rabbit!”

It was a funny-looking rabbit.

Trying to clap…

But just having too much fun to not laugh!“I might take a nap…”
“Or I might not…”

Just livin’ life…

“What should we do next?”

“We should find the sunscreen, you say?”

This flannel blanket couldn’t match the grass better, could it?

Call me crazy but these might be the most fun photos I’ve captured in a long while!

“Anny Am”

picture-23

This morning I passed a sign in the office’s break room that advertised “Aunty Em’s Donuts.” The flyer described cookies, cakes, donuts and other sweet confections available at a local bakery. Suddenly I was taken back to my days of Saturday-morning-anticipation for watching our family’s VHS recording of “the Wizard of Oz.” My mom always liked to tape the television-aired movies with no commercials but sometimes we’d forget to press “Record” at the end of a commercial. In the case of this copy of “The Wizard of Oz,” we missed the first, very important I might add, couple seconds of the poppy fields scene. Oh well. I promise you, there’s a point to this story. “Aunty Em’s” bakery sign reminded me that I always used to find my six-year-old-self repeating Dorothy’s cried for “Aunty Em, Aunty Em.” I was not a ham at all, mind you. But I always use to re-enact the scene, jetting frantically around the back yard with bonnet clutched worriedly around my ears, yelling “ANNY AM, ANNY AM!?!?!” That’s what I thought Dorothy was saying. It was not until 10 years later in my life when I heard people referring to family members or respected elders as “Aunty.” Perhaps it’s more “American” than I might have suspected but I’d never heard the term until I met Brits. Backwoods Oklahoma Kansas is about as American as anywhere can get, right? When you’re a kid, the world is yours! And you can paint your face to become the animal of your dreams, make secret lands in your back yard and create witches brew in your dad’s wheel barrow using only sticks and berries. But there are lots of things you CAN’T do when you’re a kids, I just can’t think of any cool enough to mention here.

Did YOU ever mistake common phrases or words for what they were not? Have you any childhood stories that you still remember from time to time?

As promised, I shall share cinnamon roll how-to very soon. And I’m making cupcakes for two different events in the next week and a half so you can trust you’ll find photos and recipes here at Crunchy Little Bites soon! Until then, have a very nice day!

CGS Youth camping trip to Hanging Rock State Park

picture-14

These guys contemplated “toss the hot coal.” Progression from thought to action went something like this: “Should we play toss the hot coal, Nick?” Nick: “No way, that’s too dangerous!…Well, as long as we are very careful and just hit the fiery hot coal with the tippy-tip of our fingers.” Fiery hot coal toss begin! {Who tossed that perfectly descent poptart into the fire?!}

**Warning** : This is a photo-heavy post. Some of these photos should be captioned: “Just don’t ask.”

The youth group walks. The youth group talks. The youth group poses for photos with class, style and swagger. Don’t make us say it twice: “We love our camping story-go-round-the-fire-time like a love song.” The weekend was full of smiles, sleeping bags and hot cocoa filled Styrofoam cups bummed off of the neighbors.

There may have been poptarts roasted over the fire, as well.

This lady may not have fallen into the water…

While one of these ladies **I’ll let you take a stab at who lost her footing and took an accidental soaking** may have fallen into the water.

Is that the elder wand?

Hanging Rock State park may never be the same now that CGS has trekked it’s everlasting and rugged depths. Oh yes we did and none-the-worse-for wear are we.

Here we are, pre-40-mile-trek-stretch.* Hamstrings first, people!

It takes heart to accomplish days so chock-full of adventure, obstacle and challenge.* Is someone thinking we still don’t know who’s to blame for the cocoa shortage? Think again!

And it takes lots and lots of sugary foods to provide sustenance for these warriors.*

For one reason or another, CGS really really takes to scraggly-mangy-stray-campground-mutts. Because this poor Rhodesian-ridge back-mix, pledged to be seeking asylum in the quiet backwoods of North Carolina, was, nearly, the highlight of our time camping.

Much to his relief, attention turned back to roasting random items over the our sketchy, pamphlet-kindled campfire. All was well for Pooch, one again.

These ladies were delighted with themselves and their fire-searing banana trick. Needless to say, hot bananas are the new pancake.*

Nick may have contemplated new career options like dermatology*…Teresa learned more about smiling…and, well, Jasper was fixated on her fascination with pyrotechnics. Some people never change.

Some of our youth are currently studying to be free-lance tree climbers while others turn their focus toward meteorology and still-life photography.

Did you have a great time or what?! Again, if anyone was not aware that, primarily, one man was responsible for consuming 98% of the morning’s hot beverage rations, this photo stand to prove so.

Good times were had by all. Especially those of us who made it up the fire tower hike for a gorgeous sunset.

Not to worry parents, everyone stayed far away from the edge.

*No children, bananas, warts, animals, vegetables or minerals were harmed in the making of this article.

His name is “Notion” and he’s anything but “brilliant”

me-005

Some coworkers at the office and I were discussing the possibility of Disney cinema night. We could all sit out on the lawn at the foot of our tower and watch movies and eat popcorn outdoors. Yes, we do also happen to accomplish some work in our office, too…not just talk about Disney movies…sometimes. We happened to be chatting about of of Disney’ latest movies, Tangled, and my coworker said she’s heartbroken ever time Rapunzel sees her lover-boy willingly abandoning her in the boat {when he is, in actuality, tied to the mast) and I excitedly replied “Hey! You know what that’s called?!” Both coworkers eagerly ask “yeah, what?” And a blank look came to my face…”I forget now.” Yah, that’s all I had to say. “You’re a real literary critic, ain’t ya, Jasper?”
{image source}

Well, good day to you from balmy North Carolina! Don’t be mistaken by the excitement plastered across my face, I love the sun!

And lookie here at the little artwork I created while my aunt was away … don’t worry folks, she’ll be back tomorrow evening. You know just as well as I do that these things we call “brilliant notions” at one point or another can sometimes turn out to be pretty bad ideas. For instance: two years ago I had the “brilliant notion” that if I moved to Reno, NV to help some guy that I was in love with, that he’d want to marry me. NOT a brilliant notion. More on that story later…yesterday I told my friend at work a bit about it and after recovering from a gaping jaw, she said “no way!” Well, yes way.So here’s to a day full of more-than-brilliant notions for you! If you’ve got any you’d like to share, leave them below!

Have you ever had a brilliant or NOT-SO-BRILLIANT notion?

I love adverbs

27048_792962903848_2708072_45437431_5533155_n

The original title for this past was “If it fits, it ships; courtesy of the USPS” because I was on my walk to work and had to make a stop my preferred Durham, NC United States postal office on Kangaroo Road. Wouldn’t that make a cute blog post title? Only, I had no pertinent information for a blog post for which such a title would be intended. Another item I considered on my walk to work was this: grammar and parts of speech. Many of you may know that I make grammatical errors quite a lot but they peeve me just the same. They’re such a curious and searchable subject, parts of speech that is. Prepositions, phrases, adjectives, nouns, modifiers, lest I go on.

Last night I rode the bus from Chapel Hill to Durham after a meeting at the Neurosciences hospital and as the only passenger, I think the bus driver felt it appropriate to entertain me with conversation. He shared that President Obama would be making an appearance on UNC-CH’s campus tomorrow {news to me as I’d have waited in line for a free tickets to the president’s speech} and that “women should not be allowed to join the secret service,” among other items in the bus driver’s opinions. Whatever the bus driver’s view, his comments got me to thinking: “It’s pretty interesting that every one person seems to have something to say…” Profound. I know. This was a photo I took of a cute little bean and friend in Reno, NV. She even hopped into an abandoned shopping cart for a photo that day and I am not sure that I’ve shared it on the blog or not.

A few days ago I was on my way to work and I saw something that I was, at first, reluctant to share, mostly because I thought “What if the person who I describe finds my description on the blog?” but if she does, that’s ok…This girl was dressed up in all the latest work-out clothing and marching her way through the 5-K running trail, complete with head band and iPod. In her right hand, I see jumbo size Dunkin’ Donuts coffee cup. I am sure it was filled with water ;) This chic was impressive: all the morning necessities, workout, coffee and all. And if you {she} finds this blog, please comment because I’d like to meet you, your style is awesome.Check out the new addition to crunchy little bites. Ok, so it’s a Tiffany lamp. For some reason, I really like it! Not sure if it is going to remain on the blog but for now, it’s a yes! Yes to the lamp! And if any of you care to explain, further, “I love lamp {Jasper, still, does not understand the whole Anchorman reference}” idea, please do!

This weekend I am planning to camp out in Hanging Rock State Park with a fairly large group of high-school and middle-school aged students. For the trip, I am preparing homemade trail mix and trail cookies. And if there is a random cancellation of the trip, I plan to have the ladies over for baking on Friday night on which there might be an impromptu viewing {cuz I’m not planning on anything, really ;) } of the extended “director’s cut” version of Justin Bieber: Never Say Never. That is, only if the girls are truly lucky. If we are really REALLY LUCKY, we’ll hop out on the town for a viewing of The Luck One. I TOTALLY agree with this girls’ love for The Lucky One movie. Oh, I am super excited about the possibility of seeing that movie!

For now, bye-bye!

Stayed tuned for story about my toenails coming off. The post will include a **disclamier, of course :)  As well as my most recent experiement with this girl’s poo-less project. Oh YeYah, I DID it!

Happy Tuesday to you ~ Jasper Naomi

positivity lately

dsc_0596

“Positivity” may not be a word. Positivism. Positivism. Positivist. Those are words. It’s been said that I tend to dwell on the negative. As much as this may be true I do always find much positive in life and try to share that in conjunction with nay complaints I may express. So here are some of late: 1. I get to have rainbow sprinkles atop birthday waffles TOMORROW! 2. People tend to wave, smile and giggle, more, when they see me walking to work with Slayer…one lady even said “Oh, God bless you, bless you, bless you, blessings on you…” as I walked by her and her walking buddy yesterday.

Above pictured is my birthday place mat awaiting it’s sprinkle-full waffle.

In other news, I am planning a FUN GAME for youth Sunday School, not this coming Sunday but, for next Sunday. After our camping trip to Hanging Rock State Park, which is going to be a blast, I’ve thought ahead enough to plan a super-awesome game as to not let down any youths’ fun high.  The game is one version of “Two Lies and a Truth…” or is it “Two truths and a Lie?”…It doesn’t matter, I suppose, as I have nearly two weeks to plan execution.

My mornings have been spent in the quiet of the living room with back door open to eh beautiful breeze outside. Thank you, chilly NC April, for your pleasant company.

Thanks to my aunt, we are eating plenty of glamorous food, although this raw chicken pre-cooking does not look so tasty. Last night we began to watch “Babel” and made a unanimous choice to not, further, subject our evening to depressing footage from a movie who’s four sub-plots seemed to be headed in directions nowhere other than BAD. So we switched to this movie: Love’s Kitchen in the middle of the Babel scene where Kate Blanchett’s character is on the brink of bleeding to death.

No, that scene does not remind me of eating nor does the photo scene above wet my appetite all that much. Nonetheless, I thought I’d share the photos because I, quite, enjoyed the evening at home with Aunty Sharon and it did include the yummy asparagus and chicken featured in this post. To come, later I think, will be some movie reviews as I often end up watching random movies that I find interesting and think it’s be great to keep feedback from my criticism. If that’s not complicated {getting criticism of my criticism} then I do not know what is.

This was a breakfast of mine from this past January and it reminds me that, while my 50 gallons of free blueberries last season are all gone, blueberry picking is not far off! Bring on the blueberries, May. Just thinking of them makes me weak with excitment. Also, a “best of reel” from the office {my office} is soon to come so get excited!

Much love and happy Wednesday ~ Jasper Naomi

should I, still, run that Charlottesville marathon?

565-037

Yes, Jasper met the asphalt Monday evening. {sorry about the cleavage, awkward} It could have been worse, right?! I didn’t die…or fracture my collarbone…or require surgery {things are actually, quite, awesome around here!}…if you’re interested: On Monday evening, I was biking to Chapel Hill and flew, yes flew {can you believe that?!} from my bike on old Erwin Road. Mostly my should, back and head took the brunt of my crash but I think onlookers believed me to be dead because I HOPPED up to get my bike and me off of the road and six cars all stopped to ask: “Seriously, are you ok?!” “Well, duh, I’m ok…” I thought. So I just kept heading for CH. After 20 minutes of initial shock, I wondered why I could not use my left arm, left hand or left leg, so I turned for home. My poor aunt, have mercy…she met a rather pathetic version of myself wimpering and sputtering, with bloodied limbs. It’s only my wrist and arm broken in a couple of places {sill, handle bars} — and I think I might have to choose a hot pink cast that will go lovely with the majority of my wardrobe. You could be the first to sign it!

There’s the old Jasper, when she had the use of both of her arms…

And she could pin her hair up, no problem! Now, I can barely scratch my nose with much less than a pitiful wimper, oh well! Such is life…

What’s YOUR crash, fall or accident “story?”

happy thursday ~ Jasper

i’ll give you a cupcake

dsc_0286

HHappy HaPPy HAPPY Friday to you all! It’s been an interesting week and, to finish it off, some friends and I are taking a lil’ nature hike into the woods for a bonfire! How much lighter fluid will it take to bonfire in the middle muggy North Carolina forest?

arial view of da cookies!

And what could be tastier than cookies for warm over the bonfire? That’s RIGHT: s’mores! Wish you could all some and share some s’mores…

just another sunny day

This morning on my bike ride to work I was thinking about how I could ask some friends to come support me at my marathon on April 7th in Charlottesville, VA…the only thing I came up with was “I’ll give you a cupcake.”

Has that bribe worked for for any of you?

Perhaps while you were babysitting.

Last night we might have had a potluck supper and game night…the old one gets, the less mature game night becomes…and it was Julie’s birthday week…

The video was not that exciting but the cake was delicious!

Wat are YOUR weekend plans? Perhaps you’re attending a bonfire, too?

hard to take a compliment

dsc_0004

I get a lot of comments that “[I] tell [people] they look nice ALL OF THE TIME.” To be honest, I will not compliment you if I see no reason for it. Sounds harsh. That’s because it is. Really, I wonder if those on the receiving end of my compliments who bark at my words are not feeling pains of low self-esteem that, otherwise, compel them to refuse kind thoughts of them expressed in word.

Some people are just cuties and probably always get compliments on their physical appearance…

While others might get compliments on their “performances,” work, art of accomplishment-related.

Sometimes I just cope by writing others off as “the peanut gallery” in the back of my mind. But come on now, Jasper…be realistic and BRAVE!

It’s been my experience, of late, to receive criticism instead of compliments…I find it rewarding to withstand fiery (and true, mind you) scrutiny and know I’ve always room for improvement.

Do you find yourself refusing compliments given you by others? How do you interpret others’ criticism? Have you found an effective/polite way of receiving compliments?

postcard writing and making for dummies!

Do you appreciate receiving or sending a hand-written letter? I LOVE to write letter, perhaps, even more than I love receiving hand-written letters! And, yes, this post is being categorized as “penship” not “penmanship” as I have decided to create a new word, entirely, for a new category :D

Back to post-card making! Collecting old scraps of paper and magazine clippings can be especially useful for penship ;) … Now I am not ENTIRELY sure that all of my letter-recipients appreciate, what I feel are, my awesomely recycled materials-made postcards or letter, I know that I think they’re so much fun to send! Hopefully, the folks that receive my letters appreciate getting a letter in the mail…whether my crafting skills are stinky or not.

To begin with the letter-writing process, I like to get inspired! It doesn’t take much to get me wanting to write letters, but Pinterest can be a fun place for post-card, letter or package sending ideas…

Believe it or not, when my iPhone lost ALL contacts I said “eh, anyone important can just give me a call, no need to freak out…” but I cried after thinking “I just lost all of those home addresses to which I enjoy writing and sending letter! :( ” Boo-hoo’d for a while over that thought! Not to worry, though :) I had JUSt backed up the iPhone to a desktop and system-restored that babay!

See my set-up, here, found above…Just take some time out of your day to sit down and try writing a letter to an old friend, a dear friend or even one who lives in the very same town as you! It’s fun to get the post man to deliver a letter for you, even if it is locally delivered! Also, find fun random craft accents for your letters – I LOVE to use baker’s twine for decorating mine!

My friend Hannah from New Zealand and I have been writing to each other for nearly 20 years (in August of this year, it will be twenty!) ever since my grandparents met up with her grandparents while traveling in Hannah’s home country in the Pourakino Valley (correct me if I am wrong, Hannah! :)

iPhone and cute plants are fun company for letter writing too…I’d better back up all of my addresses on hard-copy though in case my phone crashes, once, again!

So get out those pens and scrap paper and find addresses for friends while stamps are only $0.45! Yikes, I might have to resort to all email once the postage rates continue to REALLY rise!

On another note, Ashley’s post really got me excited about lots of random things, but Medjool dates and the date palm tree, especially! So fascinating! – check it out on some Wikipedia love!

And I might have cried like a little baby when I saw this video story from Twitter.

Have a happy Wednesday…it’s nearly 5 am here and I am sick in bed with fever…about to fall back to sleep….

rubber band balls for dummies

So my home gym consists of Netflix-stremed exercise videos, a jump rope, running shoes and an indoor poor + slide plus 2.5 lb free weights. Right now, though, I m in the process of making one new addition to the home gym! A medicine ball!

Don’t mind the iPhone and nail polish, they’re just for good measure. Literally! The rubber-band ball continues to grow as I continue to add pound after pound of rubber-bands to the ball!

how many pounds of rubber-bands to use?

YOU get a vote, too! How many pounds, more, of rubber-bands shall I add to my rubber-band ball for making my home-gym-medicine-ball? 1? 2? 3? 10lbs more?

you tell me!?

All it takes is more and more bags of rubber-bands to add to the ball!

that's right rubber bands + craftiness = patience!

For tomorrow! “Postcard writing/making for Dummies!”

yay for post cards!

It’s FUN to remember silly things while looking back on one’s past…and it’s nice to reflect on the right-here-right-now blessings in life…as well as wonder and dream over the future (in moderation, of course!)

for FRIDAY, yay, today: something old: Mr. Rogers. Oh how I LOVED Mr. Rogers! It was always one show that my sister and I, both, agreed to watch! (She preffered Muppet Babies -the humor always seemed to go over my head – I am pretty sure my sister, Serin, is/was genius beginning at a young age and she caught advanced humor that, otherwise and still does, goes right over my head!) Sesame street was also a show I liked – Reading Rainbow too – while my sister laughed out loud at Pee Wee’s Playhouse – I never understood his freakiness either…ah well! some blessings from today! – again FRIDAY! – one: I just won some soygurttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt yay babay! I don’t “win” things so I am convinced that now, more than ever, I aM IN THIS TO WIN THIS babay…beginning with soygurt :D click here to see my prize :) – I promise the link isn’t sketch hehe! thanks Melissa! two (blessings from the present): I just LOVE the second stall in the bathroom at work! Do any of you have a favorite stall in your work restrooms!? I used to like the last stall but now I am totally loving the second (from the left & first) stall in the restrooms at work! call me crazy, but it just makes me smile when I get the the restroom and that stall #2 is free!!!!!!!!!!

the future: even though I spend plenty of time day-dreaming and trying to reign my thoughts in, I will not spend that much time writing about it today! Mostly I’ll just say that its “smiles,” yes, smile in general are what I am dreaming of in the future. Little smiles on little faces are some of my favorite things and I’d LOVE to have kiddos with them on (smiles) running around some day but not some day soon! So enjoy the friday post here at clb and have a happy friday! – jasper naomi

unwrapped

What are some of YOUR favorite gifts?!?! A gift to unwrap today, for me, is all the blessings God gives me in THIS day!…a silly story shared with friends…a giggle in the office…a pleasantry exchanged with a stranger in the checkout lane…a fond memory. Thank you, Lord, for all the blessings in this day!

for more photos or to upload some of your own, check out my photo stream here! And have a WONDERFUL day!!!

little secretary

So when I was a wee 9-yr old, my BIG DREAM was to be a secretary. Maybe I watched the movie Working Girl too much – I might add that no 9-yr-old should be allowed to watch, even the edited-for-television version of, Working Girl. Nonetheless, I’d set up my grandmother’s typewriter on our rickety, old, wooden piano bench and would break out the stapler and, occasionally, the adding machine, pen-cup and ruler (for good measure, of course ;) ) – did anyone catch that :D ? Well NOW, that I just finished with my Facilities Management “Ergonomic Evaluation,” I realize that my childhood dreams have come true. Now all I do is run around trying to avoid the work I once idolized: a cubicle of my own and a copy machine to crouch over…yipppeeeeee?!

And I find friends at the office to whom I’ve come in to work dressing identically?! Freaky…: D…
